2024 Radda Rise International String Competition
Serafina deGregorio
Honorable Mention
•Category 1
Serafina deGregorio, a 9-year-old musician from Cleveland, Ohio, has shown a remarkable sensitivity to music since infancy, despite being born with right shoulder dystocia. Even as a baby, Serafina’s connection to music was profound; she would sit completely still for hours, listening intently to melodies. Her natural inclination for music became even more evident as a toddler when she taught herself to play "Happy Birthday" on the piano by ear and once “practiced” the piano for two days straight on her own.
During the pandemic, Serafina began teaching herself piano, but soon after, she started studying violin and piano at the Cleveland Institute of Music with renowned teachers such as Eugenia Poustyreva, Dr. Sean Schulze, and Dr. Daria Rabotkina. Under their guidance, Serafina has flourished, developing both technical prowess and a deep love for performance. She particularly enjoys playing duets with her accompanists, often expressing her joy with hugs and affection after completing a performance.
Serafina has distinguished herself through music competitions. Most recently, she was awarded second prize in the 7th String Competition Online. She performed at Cleveland Institute of Music’s 2024 Showcase Recitals, where out of 100 students, only ten were selected to go on stage.
Serafina’s musical journey is enriched by her discovery of sound-color synesthesia, a condition where she experiences music as colors, a realization that came to her while watching a documentary about Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. She looks up to violinist Augustin Hadelich, who also overcame childhood challenges, and hopes to meet him in person one day, as his story resonates with her own journey.
Beyond music, Serafina enjoys a variety of activities that highlight her creativity and energy. She loves ice skating, gymnastics, ballet dancing, and computer game programming.
