2023 Radda Rise International Vocal Competition

 Janice Delana

2nd Prize of Category 4

Janice Delana’s passion for singing took root in her early years as she grew up in the Chicago area. With over a decade of voice training, she earned a dual Bachelor’s degree in Music and Spanish from Fisk University, graduating in 2016. During her time there, Janice was actively involved in various musical ensembles and volunteered as an Assistant Director for the Fisk University Choir from 2012 to 2019. She also led worship at the Fisk Memorial Chapel for three years, starting in 2016.

In 2018, Janice began pursuing her graduate studies after receiving a Full Graduate Assistantship. She excelled in numerous masterclasses and was selected to perform in a culminating concert alongside the acclaimed collaborative pianist, Warren Jones. Her opera repertoire includes playing Vitellia in Mozart's "La Clemenza di Tito" and Edith in "Pirates of Penzance," with her last performance in this role taking place in Spring 2019.

In September 2019, Janice's commitment to celebrating African American composers took center stage when she premiered a selection from Clarence Camron-White's opera at the University of Michigan's Videmus conference, organized by Dr. Louise Toppin to elevate African American opera composers. Continuing her advocacy for underrepresented composers, Janice was a finalist in the 2023 George Shirley Vocal and Composer Competition, which focuses entirely on African American Vocal Repertoire.

Janice's impressive list of accolades includes winning the 2019 Aria and Concerto competition as the only vocalist among the top three, reaching the finals in the 2022 Classical Singers National Competition, and receiving the Triennial Graduate Performance award from Sigma Alpha Iota, her fraternity focused on music-based community service.

Recently, Janice completed her Masters in Vocal Performance at the Chicago Conservatory of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. While pursuing this degree, her recent performances include leading roles in Jake Heggie’s "Two Remain" and Puccini’s "Suor Angelica."
