Cuban-American soprano, Alexandra Sanford, aspires to develop her voice beyond classical music and opera and has extensive experience in operetta and musical theatre. This summer, Alexandra will sing her role debut as Calisto in Cavalli’s La Calisto with Red River Lyric Opera.
Alexandra was previously a Studio Artist at Opera NEO where she covered the role of Ilia in Mozart’s Idomeneo and sang roles in their scenes program, including Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro and Gabrielle in La vie Parisienne. Previous operatic roles also include Papagena with The University of North Texas Opera Theatreand a partial role of Gretel with St. Vincent Summer Vocal Intensive.
In addition to her operatic experience, Alexandra has sung many roles in the crossover genres of operetta and musical theatre. With the Enid Symphony, she sang Mabel in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance. She has also sung Rose Maybud, Josephine, Gianetta, and Phyllis with Cimarron Circuit Opera Company. Alexandra also has sung Johanna in Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd with the Lyric Theater Academy.
Alexandra has experience singing early music as well as oratorios. She has sung Lieschen in Bach’s Coffee Cantata with The Enid Symphony as well as the soprano solo in Handel’s Messiah. She will continue to expand her early music repertoire this summer by singing her role debut as Calisto with Red River Lyric Opera.
Alexandra has also placed in many competitions throughout the United States, placing 2nd in NATS Regional Auditions, 2nd in the Schmidt Youth Vocal Competition, and 3rd in Crescendo Music Awards. She also was a semi-finalist in the 2019 Classical Singer Competition.
Alexandra graduated from The University of North Texas with her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance where she studied voice under the tutelage of Dr. Stephen Morscheck and Dr. Carol Wilson.
